FAQs
Although Naxos has its own airport, most travelers prefer arriving by ferry. Ferries are also the only direct option from other islands such as Santorini or Mykonos.
It’s advisable to familiarize yourself with local transportation options to easily reach your hotel and explore the island.
Ferry – From Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Paros & More
Naxos has frequent boat connections to several Aegean islands. From Athens, ferries depart from Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio. Rafina and Lavrio are closer to Athens International Airport, while Piraeus is near the city center. Travel times range from 4 to 9 hours depending on whether you choose a conventional or high-speed ferry. Most travelers prefer ferries from Piraeus.
The island is also linked to other Cyclades islands, including Santorini, Paros, Mykonos, Amorgos, and Tinos. A local express ferry, called Skopelitis, operates routes between Naxos, Amorgos, and the Small Cyclades islands (Koufonisia, Donoussa, Schinoussa, and Iraklia) about six times per week.
Plane – From Athens
Naxos National Airport (JNX) receives direct domestic flights from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Crete (Heraklion). Flights from Athens operate year-round and last approximately 40–45 minutes, while connections from Thessaloniki and Crete are seasonal.
The airport does not handle international flights, but you can fly to nearby islands such as Santorini or Mykonos and then take a ferry to Naxos. Conveniently located about 3 km from Naxos Town (Chora), near Agios Prokopios, the airport offers quick access to the main areas and port. Transfers from the airport to hotels are recommended.
