The name Drossiani means “Dewy,” and there are two theories regarding its origin. One suggests the church was named after the area where it stands, called Drossia. Another believes it refers to the church’s icon, which supposedly “weeps” whenever the village faces danger, hence the name “Dewy Virgin.”

Dating back to the late 6th century A.D., the church is adorned with rare and beautiful paintings and provides stunning views of the Tragea Valley. The dome features Almighty Jesus Christ, while to the right of the altar, Saint George is depicted on horseback carrying a boy behind him who holds water.

Originally, the iconostasis was crafted from marble, but when it was removed, a wooden one made of dense wood—possibly chestnut—was discovered behind it.

The church includes a charming courtyard that also serves as the local cemetery. Every year on Good Friday at midday, the village of Moni celebrates a traditional event here, offering raki (strong alcohol), bread with raisins, and nuts to visitors.
