Naxos Cave of Zas

Location: Filoti

The Cave of Zas sits on the western slopes of Mount Zas, at roughly 600 meters above sea level.
In Greek mythology, this cave was believed to be the hiding place where the young Zeus found refuge while fleeing from his father, the Titan Cronus.
It is also said that here he received the powerful lightning bolt that established him as the king of Olympus. In his honor, both the mountain and the cave were named after him.

The cave itself is of significant geological interest. Its entrance—about 10 meters high and 2.5 meters wide—leads to a grand chamber that reaches up to 115 meters in height and 75 meters in width.
Inside, you’ll encounter striking stalactites and stalagmites. Excavations carried out in 1962 revealed artifacts from several historic eras, including the Neolithic and Roman periods.
During the years of Ottoman rule, local residents used the cave as a place of refuge.

Visitors can reach the area by car, but a short 20-minute walk is required to access the cave. Clear signage helps guide the way, and nearby you will find the Aria spring, known for its refreshing, drinkable water. Close to the entrance stands the small chapel of Zoodochos Pigi.

From the cave, the panoramic views over the Aegean Sea are remarkable, and the surrounding landscape is filled with lush plant and animal life.
