Filoti is a vibrant settlement, filled with tavernas, cafés, and small shops. You can also find essential services like a bank and a post office. As in many Greek villages, the central square forms the heart of local life. The wide branches of an ancient plane tree offer abundant shade to visitors relaxing with a drink or snack at the cafés around the paved square.
The architecture features typical Cycladic elements: whitewashed, flat-roofed houses and narrow alleys adorned with flowers. Locals often use their flat rooftops as open-air terraces. The village also hosts numerous churches worth exploring. The most famous is Panagia Filotitissa, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Built in the 18th century, it stands out with its three-bell tower and beautifully carved details. Just outside the church, the Ecclesiastical and Folklore Museum displays items from traditional local life, along with religious relics and icons.
Another major attraction near Filoti is the Tower of Chimaros, one of Naxos’ most iconic ancient monuments. Dating back to the 4th century BC, the tower originally stood 17 meters tall.
Finally, thanks to its location beneath Mount Zas, Filoti is a perfect starting point for hiking adventures. At around 600 meters altitude lies the Cave of Zas—legend says it served as Zeus’ refuge when he was hunted by his father, Kronos. The cave also impresses visitors with its striking stalactites and stalagmites.
