Dating back to the 8th century BC, the statue’s identity is still debated by archaeologists, with uncertainty over whether it represents the god Apollo or Dionysus.

Despite being called a Kouros, the Apollonas statue does not match the traditional characteristics of Kouroi. Typically, Kouroi depict nude young men with arms close to the body and one leg slightly forward. In contrast, the Apollonas statue appears draped in a long cloak, with long hair and a beard, leading most scholars to identify it as Dionysus rather than Apollo.

More About the Kouros of Apollonas

The statue was never completed for reasons that remain unknown. Its design is relatively simple, lacking decorative details. Two similar statues can be found near Melanes village. Archaeologists speculate that these statues may have been intended to support a temple roof, but the sculptors abandoned them due to flaws in the marble or stone. Interestingly, the Apollonas statue shows no obvious defects, yet it too remains unfinished.

The monument is unprotected, and visitors often climb onto the statue for photographs, which contributes to gradual wear and deterioration of the marble.
