Naxos Kastro (Castle)

Location: Naxos Town (Chora)

Naxos Castle, also known as Kastro, is the historic Venetian quarter of Chora and was originally built to protect the Sanudo fortress. Its construction was overseen by Marco Sanudo, the Venetian conqueror who established control over the Aegean in 1207. Stones and marble from a preexisting ancient acropolis, including blocks from the Portara, were reused in the fortress’s construction.

Note: Visitors can access the castle’s highest point via an elevator, which leads to the Avaton Café and offers stunning panoramic views.

The castle features a pentagonal fortification system with three gates, the largest being Trani Porta (“Great Gate”). Near the northwestern entrance stands Glezos Tower, once part of a 12-tower complex called Crispi. Today, it is the only tower remaining, with portions extending along the fortress’s western and northern walls.

More About Kastro

The castle has four levels and is unique in Naxos for its circular layout. Its defensive towers, particularly Glezos Tower, remain remarkably well preserved. The tower’s entrance displays the coat of arms of the Crispi family.

Beyond its military function, the castle played a key role during the Venetian period in local politics, education, and religion. Many historic buildings are still open to the public, including the Catholic Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum, and the Ursulines School. Some mansions are still owned by notable Venetian families, while others have been converted into shops and cafés.

Restoration Works

Glezos Tower was entrusted to the Archaeological Service by Mr. Petros Glezos, ensuring its preservation. Restoration is ongoing, and plans are in place to establish a museum, which will be the largest Byzantine museum in the Cyclades. Once completed, it will showcase objects from the Middle Ages and Byzantine era, including Greece’s most significant collection of detached Byzantine frescoes.
