Wine and Liqueurs
According to mythology, Naxos is where Dionysus, the Olympian god of wine, grew up. The god favored the island so much that he blessed it with fertile land filled with vineyards producing premium wines. Today, local wines can be sampled and purchased in taverns and shops across the island.
Naxos is also famous for kitron, a citrus-based liqueur made from the native citron fruit, which is similar to lemon but with a stronger and slightly different flavor. The first kitron distillery, Vallindras, was established in 1896 in Halki, the island’s former capital.
